Olin Calk -- musician, artist and retired teacher -- is the creator and ongoing caretaker and refurbisher of The Bird, known to most people as "The Roadrunner of Las Cruces." I recall driving in from California; when you see the bird you realize you're dwelling." The South Central Solid Waste Authority (SCSWA) supplied the giant constructions to move (bird head, fowl body, giant tailfeathers and the new foundation) back. "We are very happy to support The Roadrunner endeavor," said County Commissioner Wayne Hancock, SCSWA board chairman. "For over 20 years it's fascinated residents and captured the attention of everyone who has seen it. The Bird is the city's unique recycling representative." This latest version of the project is expected to be completed -- in other words, Calk will be concluded "blinging the bird" -- by the end of June.
